CENTRE FOR ADVANCED STUDIES IN HUMAN RIGHTS

The Centre for Advanced Studies in Human Rights (‘CASIHR’) is a research Centre under the aegis of Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab (‘RGNUL’). The Centre’s primary objective is to promote advanced study and interdisciplinary research on the emerging trends in human rights and its allied fields. It endeavors to encourage debates and discussions on the matters that gyrate around the human rights at regional, national and international level so as to contribute paradigm shift in the cognitive understanding of these issues. The CASIHR aims at promoting, supporting and carrying out advanced studies and interdisciplinary research on numerous issues ranging from good governance to globalization processes, with a particular focus on human rights in national, regional and international perspectives; human rights in peace and war; human rights and human security; trade and sustainable development, nuclear weapons and use of force by States; environmental degradation; democracy and rule of law; and human rights and good governance. In full recognition of the complex local, regional, national and international issues involved. The CASIHR intends to approach any study and research from a multi-level and multi-actor perspective. The vision of the Centre is no doubt highly ambitious, but so is the spirit of this university's management, staff and students who would leave no stone unturned to achieve their targets by leaps and bounds.


Bearing in mind the aims and objectives of the Centre, Major Research Project titled “Human Rights Education in Schools in India: A Comparative Study of Syllabus prescribed by State Education Board” granted by National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) was undertaken by CASIHR. A bi-annual peer reviewed Human Rights Journal named-Journal on Human Rights Practice is published under this Center aiming to contribute the literature on human rights and also providing a platform for academicians, professionals and students to contribute the research in the field of human rights. A Quarterly Newsletter, titled ‘The Human Rights Communiqué’, has also been publishing for the past 6 years under the patronage of CASIHR. Each quarter, this newsletter comprises of articles on relevant human rights issues, along with national and international news regarding current affairs in the field of human rights. CASIHR organized National and International Seminar, Webinars and Conferences on different issues related to human rights.

  • Organized a Human Rights Quiz “InQUIZitive 2.0 on 12th Sept. 2019.

  • On 6th July2020, One-Day International Webinar on 'Human Rights of Migrant Labourers inCOVID-19: Indian Scenario' was conducted in collaboration with Think India and Centre for Advanced Study of Labour Laws (CASLW) with resource person Hon’ble Mr. Justice Mohan Pieris (the former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka and Advocate General (Retd.), Mrs. Jyotika Kalra (Member, National Human Rights Commission) and Shri. CK Saji Narayanan (National President, Bhartiya  Mazdoor Sangh).

  • On 30th August 2020, an International Webinar was organized on ‘Debunking Rape Myths and Stereotypes: Safeguarding Human Rights’ with eminentresource persons Hon’ble Mr. Justice Mohan Pieris (the former Chief Justice ofthe Supreme Court of Sri Lanka and Advocate General (Retd.), Prof. (Dr.) G.S.Bajpai (Registrar, National Law University, Delhi), Advocate Seema Kushwaha (Supreme Court, India) and Advocate Ashima Mandla (Supreme Court, India).

  • To mark the celebration of Human Rights Day on 10th December 2020, a discourse celebrating Human Rights Day was organized with eminent speakers Prof. (Dr.) Balram K. Gupta (Sr. Advocate & Director (Academic) Chandigarh Judicial Academy and Shri Ravi Kalra (Founder and President, The Earth Saviors Foundation).

  • Organized an expert talk to celebrate International Day for Older People on Ist October 2021 with Resource person, Prof. (Dr.) Rattan Singh (UILS, Panjab University Chandigarh) and Advocate Ashwani Kumar Dubey (Advocate on Record, Supreme Court of India).

  • Organized INQUIZITIVE 3.0 A Quiz Competition to mark the celebration of Human Rights Day on 10th December 2021.

  • Organized special lecture on Consumers Rights to mark the celebration of World Consumer Rights Day on 15th March 2022.

  • Teams of 8 Students are doing research and data collection for National and State Human Rights Commission for India Justice Report (IJR).

  • Students run Human Rights Blog, CASIHR RGNUL.

  • Guest Lecture on the topic "EXPLORING THE THOUGHTS OF SHAHEED BHAGAT SINGH IN CONTEMPORARY CONTEXT" by Prof. (Dr.) Ronki Ram, Panjab University Chandigarh on 27/09/22.

  • InQUIZITIVE 4.0 organized by the member's students on 14/10/22.

  • Organized three days Art Fest Silsilla 1.0 to celebrate 75 Years of Independence through Artistic Expression on 9th-11th November, 2022 in Collaboration with Cultural Committee and Literary and Debating Committee.
