About the Mediation Centre
The Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law, Punjab (RGNUL) established The Mediation Centre on 13th February 2026 in furtherance of the vision of bridging the gap between theoretical understanding and real-world application of mediation as an alternate form of dispute resolution. Mediation is one of the alternative dispute resolution methods recognised under Section 89 of the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908 enacted by the Parliament. Mediation is a process in which a neutral third party assists the disputing parties to creatively resolve their disputes without going to trial. Mediation presents a unique opportunity for dispute resolution with the involvement and participation of all the parties and their advocates. Mediation is an empowering and transformative process that provides a platform to the parties to organically reach a settlement through structured dialogue and self-reflection with the assistance of the mediator. The mediator employs techniques of reflection at different levels. A Mediator does not decide what is fair or right or apportion blame. Rather, a mediator acts as a catalyst to bring the two disputing parties together by defining issues and eliminating obstacles for communication and settlement. The assistance offered by a trained mediator renders the process manageable, structured, and constructive. Ultimately, the outcome justifies the effort invested by the parties.
The Mediation Centre also aims to familiarise students with the inner workings of mediation processes. The centre’s long-term goal is to improve students’ communication abilities and instil in them the faculty of mediation through training programmes, courses, research and field-related activities, and competitions.
